What is a Vapor Cigarette or Electronic Cigarette?
You have seen people inhaling on these slick looking devices but have no idea what e cigarettes are? If you are familiar with flavored hookah pipes then this will make some sense to you. Basically electronic cigarettes or a water vapor cigarette is a battery powered device created to mimic a real smoking experience right down to the flavor, throat hit, vapor, and fulfilling your nicotine cravings.

These are meant to be an alternative to smoking regular cigarettes (view our switching to e cigarettes guide here). For me personally, they helped kick my near 1.5 pack a day habit cause I got tired of all the “smoke” stinking up the joint and the never ending increasing costs involved. I used to smoke a regular cigarette a few times a week, but found they taste SO nasty now since I switched to vaping exclusivly and have not touched one in months nor have a desire to smoke one – would rather vape instead!
So read on through to our fast start guide to vaping below…
This is how a “smokeless cigarette” works
An atomizer is activated when you inhale on an e-cigarette thus heating up the e juice or e liquid that contains all the fun stuff like flavoring and nicotine – the heat turns the liquid into a thick vapor that simulates a strikingly real smoking experience. Your lungs are filled with this vapor and you then exhale a thick cloud of white fog which looks just like smoke, yet is just water vapor and it dissipates rather quick. One standard nicotine cartridge is equal to 1 to 2 pack of cigarettes or between 200 to 400 puffs depending on the particular e cig brands and sizes.
Some brands have an automatic “shut-off” if you are inhaling too much too quickly so you do not consume too much of the liquid nicotine at once. Usually the LED will blink rapidly letting you know to stop puffing. You will feel the inhale starting to become harder, this is a sign that the battery is about to run out of power or the flavor taste burnt. Reminder: since these do not burn down, you have to pay attention to how many puffs you are taking.
Why are electronic cigarettes so popular?
Because most people who inhale these e cigarettes are regular long time smokers of analog (real tobacco cigarettes) and desire to find an alternative to smoking that will satisfy for many reasons. For one, analog cigarettes can cost up to $12 per pack w/tax for name brands and that is very expensive! A typical 2 pack a day smoker can spend over $700 per month on their smoking habit. Switching to e-cigarettes will save you a lot of money, even if you hybrid the two and use them to cut down on regular smoking. With electronic cigarettes there’s no smokers breath and you do not smell like an ashtray after enjoying one. And you can vape in places where most smoking is banned. Because it’s not smoke, it’s vapor.

How much nicotine is in e-cigarettes?
They have various levels of nicotine to choose from. You can go light or heavy (similar to a Marlboro Red or UN-filtered Camel) and extra heavy – even beyond that of an average tobacco cigarette.
- 54mg = Extra Super Bold
- 36mg = Super Bold
- 24 mg = Similar to “non filters”
- 16 mg = Similar to “full flavored”
- 12 mg = Similar to “lights”
- 6 mg = Similar to “ultra-lights”
- 0 mg = Zero nicotine
The nicotine in electronic cigarettes is very real… these are serious alternatives to traditional tobacco cigarettes.
Where can I buy electronic cigarettes?
Mainly these are sold online but becoming more popular in retail stores – although they jack the price WAY UP in the stores and in the vape shops I have visited! So yeah, e-cigarettes are cheaper if you buy e cigs online. On this site you will find several banners and links leading to the best brands that we have reviewed and recommend. Don’t settle for just one brand, try a few as they all have different pros and cons specifically in regards to what you may like. Look at our coupons page (tab on top) for current deals and save yourself some big cashola.
E-Cigarette flavor cartridges
As mentioned before, you can choose from a variety of electronic cigarette flavors and to be honest, some are a bit ridicules (cotton candy… really?) but still taste rather nice. I have tried a bunch and still prefer the tobacco flavors. Some companies come up with some catchy phrases to describe their flavor cartridge assortment (as you will see if you look around here), but the most popular are the tobacco, menthol, cherry, and vanilla varieties.
Now for something totally cool in the smoking & vaping world (as this is not just for cigarettes), check out this electronic cigar in Cuban flavor, it’s becoming a hit with new cigar smokers and veteran cigar aficionados all over the globe! These clever e-cigars come in a disposable form and can last aprox 1800 puffs and hang around next to your easy chair for up to 2 yrs. And yeah, they taste just like the real damn thing…
Plus an assortment of strange flavors like pina-colada, strawberry daiquiri, and grape, etc. Tried a bunch of them so far, they’re pretty good… but I like the good ole tobacco flavors. However it’s fun to try a bunch as you may find one or two that you really like – this just enhances the overall vaping experience of e-cigarettes that more enjoyable. Some of these fancy e cigarette flavors can be very intense – so beware!
Electronic cigarette accessories
Since these are electronic smoking devices you will need to be aware of a few things. For one, they run on a battery than eventually depletes and needs recharging as well as the e cig liquid needs to be refilled or the cartridge needs to be replaced once you have vaped them up.
For most people starting out, it is recommended you purchase a cheap electronic cigarette starter kit for under $50 that has 2 batteries, a charger, and a small variety of flavor cartridges. Or you can try a few disposable electronic cigarettes and see if the electronic cigarette is really for you. The most cost-effective option is getting a starter kit or disposable e cigarette that we recommend on this site – not the crappy ones from the gas station… cause quite frankly, they suck (poor quality, etc).
Once you get in the groove of vaping, you may want to look into getting extra batteries, a car charger, and travel cases for when you run about town. Some companies even offer designer batteries in fashionable designs. Some are pretty cool, and some are for sissy’s (lol). It’s up to you, but you can personalize them all you want. Also, you may also want to upgrade to the very popular “tank” or “tube” style vaping devices that use e juice and that offer you more control over vapor and e liquid flavor choices.
Electronic cigarette facts and warnings
The most important thing to remember about smoking an e-cigarette is that it IS real nicotine you are inhaling, so try not to overdo it and NEVER, ever, under any circumstances let anyone under 18 years of age use them. These are not toys and not for kids, not even the cartridges that contain zero nicotine.
A nicotine overdose can be very severe, that is why you need to take the time and get used to vaping an e cigarette and become familiar as to when to stop puffing. Usually 15 – 20 puffs equals a regular cigarette, try and keep count at one or two puffs per minute or so.
You should know by now that inhaling water vapor as opposed to real smoke will be a different and eye-opening experience for you, right? Most people who try these ecigs and commit to switching over are just loving them – so why not give an e-cigarette a test drive today?
